FAMILY REUNIONS AT ASILOMAR

According to a national study, some 200,000 family reunions are organized across the county each year, with 74 percent of Americans believing that organized family outings and functions strengthen a family bond. However, many families are understandably reluctant to take on the tasks associated with organizing group activities, meals and sleeping space. Enter Asilomar Conference Grounds, where all-inclusive family gatherings are a specialty, and dozens of such gatherings take place each year.
Asilomar, Spanish for “refuge by the sea,” takes guests back to a time and place of simple pleasures. Established in 1913 as a campsite for the YWCA, Asilomar Conference Grounds blends acres of sand dunes, natural forests, and coastline for precious time to be spent together.
For daytime fun, families have choices of swimming, horseshoes, volleyball, billiards, ping-pong, bicycle riding and walks along beachfront boardwalks. Evenings can be spent enjoying fireside chats, cards, board games, sing-a longs or rousing team games like Charades and Pictionary in a cozy community living room environment.
Mealtimes are a treat at Asilomar where country-style, family pleasing menus are served in the casual, friendly atmosphere of the Crocker Dining Hall. Or, families have the option of having custom planned menus served in one of the 20 special event rooms. A popular choice is a themed barbeque dinner prepared in an oceanside fire pit complete with picnic tables and red-checkered tablecloths.
Sleeping arrangements are perfectly suited for families of all sizes and ages. A total of 314 guest rooms, sequestered throughout 28 clusters of historic lodge buildings, can economically sleep two to seven. Each building shares a common living room, many with oversized fireplaces and pianos, which can be used for family socializing.
And, no need to stress over all the organizing as Asilomar’s professional in-house catering and conference services staff expertly handles every detail -- from menus and rooming lists to recreational activities and local sightseeing ideas.
Rates begin at $97.29 (historic rooms) and go to $109.12 (standard rooms). These rates include all taxes and are based per person, per day, based on two adults per room. Family reunion rates include three full meals per day and the complimentary use of a living room or hospitality/meeting room. Rates for children ages 3-17 are $61.19.
