Asilomar Conference Grounds Launches Food Donation Program
PACIFIC GROVE, November 19, 2004 - Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to community and charitable support services, Asilomar Conference Grounds, in Pacific Grove, launched a local food donation program for surplus food products in 2002. Local recipients of the program include the Monterey Bay Area Salvation Army, Pacific Grove Meals on Wheels and Goodwill Industries of Monterey County.
"We serve an average of 1,600 meals a day at Asilomar," explains Executive Chef Colin Moody. "There are occasions when we serve fewer guests than expected, or we have excess food product. By implementing this program, we accomplish two very important objectives: helping those in need and reducing food waste."
The Salvation Army's Good Samaritan Center in Seaside hosts daily meals for the homeless and accepts prepared food, while Meals on Wheels accepts cases of excess canned products for serving those with mobility challenges. Asilomar's inaugural food donation of 100 sandwiches was made in December to Goodwill Industries, when 100 lunch guests were a last-minute "no-show."
Asilomar's Crocker Dining Hall is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serves three chef's choice full-course meals to conference attendees as a part of their stay, and leisure guests upon request. Built in 1918 and designed by California's renowned architect Julia Morgan, the Crocker Dining Hall accommodates up to 850 guests for each meal.
Located in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and host to thousands of groups since 1913, Asilomar features 314 secluded guest rooms with private bath and approximately 27,000 square feet of meeting space.
Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds, a unit of California Department of Parks & Recreation, is operated by DNC Parks & Resorts, one of the nation's leading hospitality management companies. DNC P&R provides visitor services for 12 additional visitor destinations throughout the country including Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, in California.
